my web sites
Here's a nearly complete list of all the web sites I've had a hand in making over the years, listed in approximate chronological order from most to least recent. For various reasons, I've left out old versions of some sites or sites which I don't have a copy of anymore. Please feel free to visit any of the currently running sites and send comments. Enjoy!

mike's personal homepage
approximate run time: May, 2003 - Present
The current incarnation of my personal homepage, this was my first site to involve Macromedia Flash. Shout-out to Dave for pointers on that one. It also features a new set of themes more pertinent to my current interests, specifically music and photos. I also tried to go for a brighter look with this one, since the previous versions of the site all featured dark colors, which kinda went out with 2001.

flyingbattery
approximate run time: July, 2004 - Present
Behold ye flyingbattery.net, my first domain! This basically took over for SpockNet as a sort of directory around the rest of my sites and a place to put all the little details of my life anyone may care to read about. I blame Dave for making me buy this, but in the long run having a domain is fun.

|
SpockNet 4
approximate run time: September, 2003 - May, 2004
SpockNet is the front page I use for Canopus during the school year, as a sort of directory around the rest of my sites and a place to put all the little details of my life anyone may care to read about. Every year it gets a revamping, and this is the fourth and, sadly, the final edition. The goal was for it to just look nice, and I think the mission was accomplished. I liked this one a lot.

mikenheit
approximate run time: March, 2003 - Present
This was an exercise in stupidity that gained a cult following. In order to cheer myself one cold wintry day in Rochester, I came up with a new temperature scale centered at freezing, where the degrees above freezing were farenheit and the degrees below freezing were celsius, so it would always seem warmer than cold because farenheit degree increments are larger than celsius. Now I have affiliates across the US. Go figure. The theme of this site: simplify, simplify, simplify. Shout-out to squuush for helping me develop the conversion script. Not officially discontinued, but don't expect anything new here.

Slater
approximate run time: November, 2002 - Present
Yet another exercise in stupidity, this site was the result of months of my suitemates going back and forth about how we should have a web comic about the suite. Of course, I eventually bit the bullet and made one and everyone loved it so much that I decided to make a series. And a web site. And shirts. It goes on and on. Eventually work became a problem so I couldn't keep it up for most of Spring semester 2003, but I plan to continue it. This site was very hastily thrown together and I don't really care too much about the quality of the graphics so long as it's navigable. Expect intermittent updates.

SpockNetIII
approximate run time: September, 2002 - May, 2003
SpockNet is the front page I use for Canopus during the school year, as a sort of directory around the rest of my sites and a place to put all the little details of my life anyone may care to read about. Every year it gets a revamping, and this is the third edition. The theme here was a clean, professional look. The site also includes a nifty tour I made of our suite.

mike's mix
approximate run time: April, 2002 - Present
The main purpose of this site was for me to be able to catalogue my CD mixes. When it turned out that I had a few fans out there, I decided to include extras like sound samples and my personal takes on the mixes. Until the advent of Slater, this was the most requested site on Canopus, mostly people referred by search engines. I attribute that to the presence of many band and song titles. Another site where I didn't pay too much attention to graphical detail, just so long as it worked. That being considered, I think it turned out pretty nicely.

|
SpockNet2
approximate run time: September, 2001 - May, 2002
SpockNet is the front page I use for Canopus during the school year, as a sort of directory around the rest of my sites and a place to put all the little details of my life anyone may care to read about. Every year it gets a revamping, and this is the second edition. The theme here was a cool, techy, neon-esque look. It didn't work as well as I planned and I feel that this particular rendition of the site was overblown, taking up far too much space on the screen. Live and learn.

SpockNet
approximate run time: October, 2000 - May, 2001
SpockNet is the front page I use for Canopus during the school year, as a sort of directory around the rest of my sites and a place to put all the little details of my life anyone may care to read about. Every year it gets a revamping, and this is the first edition. The theme here was a small, simple site. This is one of my favorite sites of the ones that I've made because of its efficiency with screen space. Also, this was the first site to feature a panorama, thanks to my newly acquired digital camera.

|
Gagarin 2000
approximate run time: August, 2000 - Present
This site is dedicated to the members of my team from Space Camp, and includes pictures of them and various other team-related stuff. This site was one of my experiments in getting elements to butt up against each other in HTML and I learned a lot from making it. Not quite sure how I'd describe the theme so you're just going to have to figure it out for yourself. Sorry.

|
Marcus&Mars
approximate run time: May, 2000 - Present
Marcus&Mars was a book I began writing in tenth grade and still haven't finished, but I'd been making plenty of artwork and other material for it in the meantime. This site was about that book, and a place to publish all that material. It never really got off the ground, but I intend to finish both the site and the book. This site was part of a series of experiments in using photographs on pages, contrary to my primarliy geometric graphics prior to this.

LEX Realty, Inc.
approximate run time: September, 1996 - Present
That's a little misleading, actually. This version of the site was created in July, 2000. It too was part of an experiment in photographs which I thought worked very well. One of the major components of this site was the ability to add and remove elements without disrupting the whole works. The previous version fell apart when you tried to change it. This was good practice for later on, and I really like the way it turned out. As of August, 2002 I no longer maintain this site so it's very possible it doesn't look like this anymore.

|
For.Net Technologies
approximate run time: July, 2000
I made this site as a job for Simtech and the guy never paid us so I never gave him his site and it never made it to the web. I still have a copy but I think it would be a bad idea to publish it. Again, ask me nicely; it's very pretty.

|
South Bay Cardiovascular Associates, P.C.
approximate run time: December, 1999 - June, 2001
Here's a site I did for a professional cardiology practice on the island. Unfortunately, the project had to take a back seat to more important matters there and was eventually forgotten about, so it's no longer available. Sorry. Ask me real nice and I may show you my local copy. Maybe.

|
Route 9 East
approximate run time: July, 2000 - Unknown
I did this site for a family friend's band. Really quick and dirty. Really quick and really dirty. That's all I have to say in my defense. The site has since been replaced by another one which I didn't make nor do I maintain, and I'm not even sure when that happened hence the "Unknown". Oh well. As they say in French ... well shoot I don't know French so I can't spell it but it sounds like say la vee.

The Pulse
approximate run time: December, 1999 - February, 2000
As part of our millennium celebration, my high school newspaper (for which I was the layout editor) ran a full-color issue featuring ads for our brand new web site, seen here. This site was going to kick serious arse but our stupid beauraucratic school district nixed it in just a few months because students hadn't agreed to any releases allowing their names to be used online. But I suppose bygones are bygones so here's the site for all to enjoy! Please note, it hasn't been updated since the school put the kabosh on it.

|
Shepard 1999
approximate run time: September, 2002 - May, 2003
This site is dedicated to the members of my team from Space Camp, and includes pictures of them and various other team-related stuff. Yet another site that was done quickly and dirtily, but I think this one actually came out very nicely. Its beauty is in its simplicity.

Starfield Generator
approximate run time: August, 1998 - Present
This site never officially died, but it's been about 4 years since it's had an update. It is the home page of the only practical program I ever wrote, which had the sole purpose of making starfield graphics. I can't speak for anyone else, but I have used this program on many occasions and it's a Godsend. If you have a Mac, I suggest you download it. Mabye if I'm bored one day I'll update it.

Mike's Personal Homepage - Old Version
approximate run time: August, 1998 - May, 2003
Here's a site that lasted entirely too long and was never completed. It's unfortunate, because it looks really cool. On the other hand, the content was very High School, and the colors showed up too dark on many monitrons. The starry background on top was of course made by my program Starfield Generator, and I just loved the way all the graphics fit together. I was a fan of this color scheme for a long time. Oh well, I promise I'll do a better job on finishing the next version of the site.

|
Mystery Science Theater 3000
approximate run time: April, 1998 - Present
Another site that never officially died but hasn't been updated since its inception years ago, and probably never will be. At one point I became obsessed with Mystery Science Theater and decided to make a fan page. It barely got off the ground, but for your viewing pleasure here it is.

|
National Conference of CPA Practitioners
approximate run time: January, 1998 - May, 1999
I made this site independently for a national professional association of accountants. As a High School student, the demands of the job soon became greater than the time I could afford to put into it and so I had to pass it along to the next guy. But I didn't and kept trying to keep it up, then my lung collapsed and I spent three weeks in the hospital and then I gave the site up. So if you click on the link the page looks nothing like the thumbnail, but there is a version of the page that I made floating around somewhere.

Simualted Technologies
approximate run time: February, 1998 - March, 2001
One day I got tired of Dave's old layout for Simtech and took it upon myself to make a new one. To my surprise, everyone really liked it so it stuck for a few years. Unfortunately, I don't have a copy and it has since been replaced with a site Dave made. The link is to the current site. Also, this is one of only a few sites I designed using Windows and the screenshot is taken on a Mac, which explains the vast black void below the text. Incidentally, this site was my first real experience with Adobe Photoshop.

|
Vulcan Enterprises
approximate run time: March, 1997 - Sometime in 1998
This was the cover company I made for my web design until I joined up with Dave for Simtech. The title is a horrible play on words and shows what a hopeless Trekker I was. I played around with Java on this site and discovered how much I hated it, so that was fun. Otherwise, nothing else interesting here... keep moving.

|
CPA's 'R' Us
approximate run time: October, 1996 - Present
The first job I ever had in web design was to make this page for my dad's accounting practice. It was also my first foray into frames, and I'm sure it shows. This site hasn't been updated since it was made so don't call me names, ok? Use this as a base to gague my progress over the past decade or so.

|
MSKNet
approximate run time: December, 1994 - Present
Here's where it all started: my very first web site. Shout-out to Dave for showing me how to make one. Being unfamiliar with the process, I decided I could make a comprehenisve web site about anything and everything interesting to me while in seventh grade. It never happened. Two versions of the site later, the content never changed. So it was pretty and I learned a lot of design from it, but overall a failure of a site. Another long-dead site that has never been officially killed, but has been effectively replaced by SpockNet.

|
Pre-history
approximate run time: 1994-1995
Believe it or not, there are even older sites out there. The first two versions of MSKNet seem to be lost forever, as are old versions of the LEX Realty site and the ScottyD gateway. But of course, last (or first) and certainly not least are the first two versions of my homepage, formerly hosted on Tripod (back when they first started) and when I claimed the handle "j5". Try getting that on any modern service. Alas, I have no archived versions of these sites but I figured I'd throw them in there.
